Software Process Improvement

There are many Software Process Improvement models. Some examples are:

  • SEI CMM
  • ISO Spice
  • Bootstrap
  • Trillium
  • SEI Personal Software Process (PSP)

Note that ISO 9000 and TickIT are not process improvement models, but rather, Quality System frameworks within which process improvement activities can occur.

In working with organizations seeking to improve their software development process, I'm frequently asked: "Which Software process improvement model should we use?"

My recommendation is that the model is less important than the end result. Clearly, any software development process must:

  • be cost-effective, and
  • make sense from a business standpoint
Measurement of key business parameters needs to be part of any Process Improvement initiative.

In my experience working with companies, I've found that in order for process improvements to take hold, Management needs to be actively involved. Without Managment involvement, many process improvement efforts result in a lot of wasted effort with little or no return on investment.

Some reasons for initiating Software Process Improvements include:

  • Unacceptably high defect rate
  • Improve Customer satisfaction
  • Reduce time to market
  • Reduce or eliminate costly bug fix releases
  • Current process is ineffective and/or not followed

By coupling over 30 years of experience in software development and quality assurance together with the experience and product knowledge of your staff, we can identify those aspects of your development process that need improving and those aspects that are working well. In this way, we fix what's broken and leave the rest alone. This helps minimize disruption and provides the best return on investment.
